Race Day: Hunting Island 04/13/24

Race 01.2024

It’s always good to get the first race of the season behind you. As it has been said, Everything gets done one day at a time. This is true in training, racing and life in general.

Hunting Island Race is historically windy, bumpy and flowy. This year’s opener did not disappoint, with 20 mph wind and a current change mid-race. Yet I had the benefit of being the only competitor in my division. Well, many raced as a One-of-One, so there were a few in the same position. It’s not the way most of us want to win a race, however, for the first race of the year, it’s a nice way to -ease- into the season. Just paddle. So I picked up 60 points in OC1.

For most of the race I tried to stay just a few bpm over my Lac threshold. I worked to stay around 160-165. Close to the end I slowed to chat with another paddler so there was a dip there. Overall it was a good pacing and tracking training session.
